There’s still time!!!

This was originally prepared by Jane Wilson during the US Open tennis tournament but it has been modified for the new season!

While it may be too chilly for the various water activities that the Club offers, it is not too late to enjoy some rigorous outdoor activities and we are proud to re-introduce racket and, now, paddle sports back into the club’s offerings. A long-overdue refurbishing of our two tennis courts, with new Har-Tru surfacing and painted pickle ball lines, was completed this past summer and we have seen a number of weekends where both courts were used on each day. It brought back memories of the very competitive tennis ladders and tennis tournaments from years past!

We have managed to restore the courts with a re-surfacing instead of a complete rebuild but that has, still, come at a significant cost. Like the purchase of the new keelboat, we are hoping to offset all or most of the cost with generous donations from tennis and pickleball players and enthusiasts alike. While any donation would be appreciated, I’d like to encourage anyone who can to join our family and several others who have already pledged and donated amounts ranging from $500-$1000 to help us meet our goal of raising $25,000. In addition to the courts, the tennis shelter is in need of repair and we expect added cost to the grounds maintenance contract to add leaf blowing and vine cutting into the regimen. Our hope is that, as enthusiasm builds, we can organize some junior and senior matches and, perhaps, offer some lessons down the road. One of the many reasons why our Club is such a bargain is the low dues its members pay for the amenities we all enjoy. Please consider supporting this effort.

If you do decide to contribute, please send a check to the WRYC address (noting the intent of the contribution), drop off a check at Southern Realty at Flat Iron or contribute by eCheck. (See below for the eCHeck link and instructions.)

Please note that the Club is designated a Not for Profit organization by the IRS, meaning we are Tax exempt and operate as a break even private organization 501(c)(7), not charitable. Thanks for being part of our great organization and we hope you'll consider supporting this effort.

A Scrumptious Soirée

Many thanks to all who helped with the potluck-style Holiday Soirée earlier this month, especially to Ceci! She and her group of elves did a remarkable job on transforming the Clubhouse space into a wonderland. Dips, desserts, soups, Chick-fil-A nuggies, and a beef tenderloin graced the tables, and made the event into one I will not soon forget!

Consider lending a helping hand at a social for 2023–it is a great opportunity to meet friends and learn more about your Club. I know we will need it! Let’s see if we can top 2022– we already have an exciting Oktoberfest in the works which is graciously being put together by guest hosts coming in from Germany to bring a little “gemütlichkeit” to the Ware!

From the Commodore

Hard to believe that it happened again. Earlier this year I described an event in glowing sports terms - again it happened. The annual Oyster Roast was a smashing success - another “walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth”! Thanks to Will and Tish Grant’s family for all their efforts. Garretts, Hermansons, and Holtquists - as well as others - were guilty of contributing to the success. The oysters were great. Historical thanks to Ben Garrett for passing the chowder recipe on to Jim. Some of the biggest baddest hot dogs served in Ware Neck. If you want them they can be found at Nuttall’s Store. If that sounds like an unsolicited promo for the store - you’re correct - it is. I was amazed to look at my watch after 8 o’clock - a time when usually 75% of attendees are gone - and found the club still to be full of people having a great time. Mostly thanks to all who attended - seems strange to thank people for having a fun time - but there it is.

Next up is a resurrection of an old Club tradition - Christmas party. After we joined - I remember it being held this way many times. With a little effort from many people to bring dishes a fine meal was available. Fun way to celebrate. Christmas garb!

Don’t forget the annual meeting coming along in January. Expect a strong push for volunteers in the social arena. We need to get away from the same people stepping up to work. New blood!!!

Monthly “who said it quiz”: What football coach - faced with a major injury in his starting lineup said: “we’ll just use one of the Italian boys”?

See you at the Club.

The Latest Fleet Scuttlebutt......

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the loft, all the sails were folded neatly, from Ullman to NorthCroft,

The tillers and rudders were stacked in their spaces and all masts and booms were resting firm in their places.

The inflatable dinghies stowed each side of the rack with the oars and accessories on the left near the back.

Some of our crew had affixed the flags to the wall with the race markers, anchors and weights in their stall.

Others made sure all the dollies were working, so moving our boats would be smooth and not jerking.

The keel boats were moved to rest safe on the hard, in case a storm came and moved them out of our “yard”.

So, thanks to so many we had another great season, Gov Cup, Jr and Adult sailing are just some of the reasons.

While there’s still much to do and we’re never really done, we’ll be ready next season for another year of fun.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Fleet Group. Thank you all for your help and participation in 2022.

Jim Garrett Fleet Captain.

Commodore Ramblings

The end of the year approaches - only a couple of events are left. Unfortunately Oktoberfest did not fly - finally done in by the weather. As always we thank everyone - particularly Shanna and Pat for stepping up to be the organizers. Perhaps next year.

Thanksgiving time is upon us. Despite the many woes in the world - the Club has much to be thankful for. Club activities have rebounded - and sometimes exceeded - pre-Covid levels. Membership is up. There have been significant upgrades to the facility - with more needs identified. I personally am quite thankful for the continued efforts of the Board members - fantastic job. And - most importantly - very thankful that no major storms came to visit!

In the traditions of WRYC - the Oyster Roast ranks at the top. Members have stepped up with extensive plans to again make this a successful event. We encourage everyone to join in - should be a fine event!

“Who said it?” quiz of the month: “We know that he has, more than any other man, the gift of compressing the largest amount of words into the smallest amount of thought”.

See you on the 12th.

The Latest Fleet Scuttlebutt.....

Sailing in Texas on Wednesday nights!

As I write this I’m sitting in a hotel room in Seabrook Texas overlooking Clear Lake…..its 80 degrees and there are a number of sailboats sailing around out near the cut channel going into Kemah. The breeze is brisk, probably a steady 12 knots out of the southeast and the boats and crew are getting ready to start the Wednesday night beer can races. But I digress……………

Well, back at WRYC, by contrast, there isn’t much going on. Fall is upon us and we will be moving the keel boats on November the 4th to their winter home over at Mobjack Bay Marina, and the other club boats will get repositioned in the field storage area in the next few weeks I know I’ve mentioned organizing a workday to put some of the lasers back together and I’ll get around to it but it may be spring now before it happens. I mentioned this in the last Telltale I believe, but if anyone would like to donate to the Adult sailing program in support of fleet maintenance it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount you feel comfortable with is accepted as it will go directly to Fleet and the boat repairs. $25, $50, whatever you can contribute.

Other wise we’re getting ready for our highlight event, the Fall Oyster Roast and hope to see you all there.

Steady winds and trailing seas be upon you,

Jim Garrett / Fleet
