Sailing in Texas on Wednesday nights!
As I write this I’m sitting in a hotel room in Seabrook Texas overlooking Clear Lake…..its 80 degrees and there are a number of sailboats sailing around out near the cut channel going into Kemah. The breeze is brisk, probably a steady 12 knots out of the southeast and the boats and crew are getting ready to start the Wednesday night beer can races. But I digress……………
Well, back at WRYC, by contrast, there isn’t much going on. Fall is upon us and we will be moving the keel boats on November the 4th to their winter home over at Mobjack Bay Marina, and the other club boats will get repositioned in the field storage area in the next few weeks I know I’ve mentioned organizing a workday to put some of the lasers back together and I’ll get around to it but it may be spring now before it happens. I mentioned this in the last Telltale I believe, but if anyone would like to donate to the Adult sailing program in support of fleet maintenance it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount you feel comfortable with is accepted as it will go directly to Fleet and the boat repairs. $25, $50, whatever you can contribute.
Other wise we’re getting ready for our highlight event, the Fall Oyster Roast and hope to see you all there.
Steady winds and trailing seas be upon you,

Seasons come and seasons go. So happy to see cooler less humid weather come in. We’ve had an incredibly successful summer season with events and programs that went well. The transition to Fall was marked again by a fine event - the Labor Day Social. Autumn and Harry Taylor were the organizers - special appreciation is given to Stephanie Peart, Mark Holthaus, Sean Smith, and Eric Moore for volunteering to help. Gary and Beve always seem to show up when help is needed and with Mark did cleanup duty. Thanks to Charlie Woerner for "coming home” to cook and reminding us of the thanks due to the Woerners for many years of service.
No longer being of a younger generation - I remember being taught to use a keyboard - it was called “typing”. A sentence that was used was “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid……”. Now on my keyboard that sentence is finished “….aid of their CLUB”. Now is the time for planning for 2023. Board members are finishing their Covid tour of duties. Help is needed to keep this going. We need YOU to step up - so please give serious consideration to participation.

Being a politician requires “ the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it did not happen.”

It seems we’ve turned the corner on summer and headed squarely into Fall. Still plenty of sailing opportunity this time of year though. Hopefully we continue to dodge the remainder of Hurricane season and have some great sailing weather…….so far so good.
Adult sailing classes have ended and all in all I believe we had a successful season. We ended with a number of folks able to “single hand’ the lasers and a few who can skipper an Albacore or a keel boat. Many thanks to our instructors who dedicated their Saturday to helping folks learn the basics and get them started in this great sport. We will plan to have a meeting over the winter to organize for next year.
There’s been some discussion about organizing an overnight sailing trip to Cape Charles in October using member boats and our club keel boat TB, and a few folks have shown interest. If you’d like to hear more about this please let me know and I’ll get you with Scott Titus who’s organizing these “cruises”.
The next order of business will be to finish our list of repairs on the Lasers and Opti’s. The keel boats will remain in the water until late October or early November so please let me know if you want to get out on one or get checked out, there is still time.
Not much else to report. Please be on the lookout for an email scheduling a weekend to finish the boat repairs, until then…..
Steady winds and trailing seas be upon you !

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
…and I’m not talking about Christmas! The annual Oyster Roast is approaching, so mark your calendars to be at the Club the evening of Nov 12th. Unfortunately, I can’t get too turnt with Beve as I’m pregnant, but it will still be a great time! If oysters aren’t your thing, I hear there will also be Guinea Chowder and some hot dogs. You can stay warm by the fire (or with some liquid fireball), and shuck some oysters with your comrades. Invitation forthcoming!
As usual, we are looking to form a social committee. This would not take too much of your time, as the work would be distribute across multiple members, not just one. If interested, please reach out to Autumn at bariautumn@gmail.com, or wareriveryc@gmail.com. Thank you for your continued support of your Club!

Commodore’s Ramblings
State of the Club: PONDERING! Indeed I have been pondering which positive adjectives to use in describing the remarkable success of this year’s Gov. Cup. My pondering has moved on to consideration of appropriate sports analogies. Was it a “walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th?” - a “3 pointer drained from another zip code at the buzzer?” - a “slam dunk over a short guy?” Even non-sports fans can appreciate how well this event went. So much went well - overall organization, weather control, tide control, registration, food management, grounds management, race management on the water, Junior Sailing, and a fantastic dinner. Fantastic tee shirt design! Many thanks to all who contributed - your efforts are greatly appreciated. Perhaps I should add - special thanks to the person who put 2 cookies instead of 1 in each lunch bag. Cookie Monster approves!
I’m sorry that the football outing to VT-ODU did not work out. Many of us remember fun trips to William and Mary, Annapolis, and Charlottesville for football games. I think the concept remains alive. Perhaps other sports events - basketball or baseball, horse races, cultural events, boat shows, wineries …. Suggestions are welcome. If someone brings a suggestion they will not automatically be asked to be an event organizer.
Our Social Events seem to be recovering well from the Covid doldrums. We’re looking forward to the Labor Day event this weekend. Thanks to Harry and Autumn for their efforts in hosting. It is rumored that this event may involve a re-appearance of an old Club favorite: Charlie Woerner. He and Mary Alice were stalwarts - so many social events. Welcome back Charlie!
Hope to see you at the Club or on the water!

Governors Cup and Jr Sailing are now behind us, which means that Fall is approaching. We’ve begun to assess our Lasers, Opti’s and club Albacores for what repairs are needed and it appears we have quite a few. Thanks to a few members we’ve already begun to inspect boats and have a good list of what’s needed for the Opti’s and Lasers and have already ordered parts. Once we determine what’s needed for the Albacores I’ll organize a workday to get everything repaired. We still have some of the best sailing whether ahead so we definitely want to take advantage.
Adult sailing is winding down and and we’ve had a really successful year, as measured by the number of folks who have attended on a regular basis. We plan to continue offering these classes through September as instructors are available. Many thanks to our instructors, Mike Mastracci, Scott Titus, Joe Morgan and Ian Palmer. As with all areas of club activity, nothing gets done without volunteers willing to donate their time and talents to promote and support WRYC. Please think about where you can serve and be part of making a difference.
The reservation system for checking out the Club boats (keel and dinghy’s) seems to be working well and I appreciate all the folks who’ve used it to reserve a boat. Both keel boats have had quite a bit of use this season and for anyone who still wants to get checked out on them, please let me know and we’ll schedule the time.
That’s about it for now. Hope to see you on the water.
Happy Sailing,
Jim Garrett - Fleet
