A Note From The Commodore - 7/3/19

Time does fly! We are already well into the summer boating season with several activities buzzing past us this summer. As I have mentioned before, the Club runs on volunteers, not just for our socials and sailing events, but also for its upkeep. Dave Brown, Bill Brown, Gary Hermanson, and Jon Lucy (my apologies if I have missed anyone!) have done a phenomenal job overhauling our shower/restroom facilities! They have cleaned, painted, replaced cabinets, replaced sinks, replaced toilets, added carpeting, and added an air conditioner to the ladies’ space. I want to give a special shout-out to the group that’s re-vamping our shower/restroom facilities. This would not have been possible without the help of Ferguson (and Erin Matthews) for providing materials at a deeply discounted price. Our facilities now look great and are a better reflection of our Club! We expect this will improve our hospitality for events like the annual VA Governor’s Cup and rentals; the air conditioning in the ladies’ room provides a badly needed bride dressing room for our wedding rentals. Next time you are at the Club, check it all out!

As I mentioned, our sailing season is in full swing with Saturday morning lessons, the Sunday Sailing Series, and the WRYC Jr. Sailing camp. Please remember that the Saturday morning lessons are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you plan to attend, please pre-register on our fancy new website: wryc.org. Available boats in the WRYC fleet are available for rental to our membership, so contact Scott Titus if you want to take one out! If you plan to sail a keel boat, you may need a checkout with Scott, so it is important you communicate with him about your interest.

Our keel boat fleet has had some eventful developments. First, we should soon have an addition of an Irwin 25 once engine repairs are completed. Scott Titus will be providing more information as the transfer to the Club is finalized. Second, our racing keelboat, Snagglepuss, broke her mooring and is having a rough few months. John Singleton lead the rescue efforts; thank you, John! Unfortunately, we have to repair a damaged bowsprit and the engine, but we hope to have her back into the fleet soon.

Our annual Anchor-On-The-Ware event is coming up on July 20th. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a Club for the sheer enjoyment of our Club, its membership, its facilities, and the wonderful river which inspired our Club’s formation. This event brings out the best in all we have to offer, and we encourage you, the membership, to invite friends and family to share in this gift. Please spread the word!
